Yahoo! Movies

Designing scalable topic pages for all of the entertainment verticals

2007 – 2011

The Challenge

In 2011, the content for individual movies and celebrities was spread out all over the site. There was no good way for users to dig in and learn about or immerse themselves in a topic. Yahoo needed a scalable topic/entity sections to house all content related to a person or movie.

A top level entity page should be satisfying in its own right but compel the user to dig deeper.

A movie entity should answer the questions "What is this movie about?", "Will I like it?" and "When/Where can I see it?"

A person entity should solve for a casual fan who wants to know "Who is this person" and "What have they been in?" and a super-fan who wants to dig into biographical details.

Design should scale well for Yahoo!'s international sites and handle all languages. Some regions may not have all data, so pages need to degrade gracefully.
